WiiKey Base Disc
The base 1.2 disc for the WiiKey is a DVD packed with application for Nintendo Wii consoles that have been modded with WiiKey Modchip. It's main purpose is to configure the WiiKey modchip settings. Along side of it's basic practical uses, this base disc allows users to backup their Wii/Gamecube games to an SD card via a GCMC (gamecube memory card) to SD adapter, Load media (game's, emulators, applications, audio and video) via the SD-GCMC adapter and/or DVD media, and play a variety of classic SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) video game ROMs via the SNES9x emulator.

WiiKey Review:
The WiiKey was announced at the beginning of February 2007 and shipped to the stores at the end of the month. It is one of many drive modchips available for the Nintendo Wii and it acts as a firmware replacement funneled through the debug serial port - tricking the DVD drive into believing that Copied DVD-R backup is in fact a legit original game DVD. This trick works much like current Xbox 360 chips do. Like its current competitors, the WiiKey is installed onto the Wii's drive either by quicksolder or using six wires. Mod-chip can then be updated through the use of a Setup DVD Disc which can be downloaded from the WiiKey website.
Compatibility of WiiKey is very good - no slowdowns / stuttering and region patching on the Wii does indeed work.
The WiiKey performs as expected and does a good job. It gladly accepts any disc you throw at it (provided it is a good enough brand/dye of course) also if it is rewrittable

- The board and position of the quicksolder points may require a bit more skill to install because aligning has to be precisely.

To open up the console and install the chip the following tools will be required:
- A Tri-wing screwdriver
- A small prying tool
- A small phillips head screwdriver

Will WiiKey mod chip work with Nintendo Wii ONLINE games?
The manufacturer says Yes, and I would have to agree with that. WiiKey and all the rest of the flirts generation mods for Wii are Drive Chips, so they DO NOT modify anything in the Firmware of the console and are "invisible" to the Wii operating system. (They modify the responses that the DVD Drive sends to the motherboard when verifying discs authenticity). This does not mean that we are 100% safe and that Nintendo will never can't come up with a way to detect the chips, but if the history is anything to go by we are safe. (Also good to know that all Nintendo DS online games when played from a NDS Flash Card work just fine so the big N is not to worried about piracy)
Is there any special upgrades you have to do after chipping the system to get it to play DVD movies?
No, the chips is up and running as soon as you have it installed. (Configuration is need for enabling Region override to play imported games PAL on NTSC and NTSC on PAL.)1st gen ModChips don't modify Wi OS and don't add new Channels so to play movies you have to use a GameCube homebrew application called MFE Mediaplayer that comes with the WiiKey Base Disc (disc used for configuring WiiKey options). MFE MediaPlayer runs a stripped down version of Linux on the Wii, but its navigation is easy and compatibility is great.
Can GameCube games be burned onto regular size DVD-Roms and be played on the chipped Wii?
Yes they can! No need for mini-DVD any more. And homebrew applications can use all the 4.7 GB of a DVD and are not limited to regular GC disc size.
